100 years ago, meditation was associated with religion, and for the most part, only monks and yogis practiced it. Today, meditation has become a spiritual practice easily accessible to anyone.
Meditation in the modern age has moved beyond sitting for hours in Lotus. Our busy lifestyles mean that to experience the benefits of meditation, the practice has adapted to modern life.
We often complain about how difficult it is to find the time and peace to meditate in the modern era, but here’s the flipside…
Here are a few cool modern advantages you can use to enhance your meditation practice quickly and effectively.
How to Get the Modern Meditation Advantage
1. Brainwave Entrainment.
Getting into a meditative state can be frustrating, especially when you intuitively know you need it most (your mind is racing with the dramas and worries). The brain naturally falls into rhythm with audio stimuli; in this case, the same frequency generated by the brain in a meditative state.
Entrainment, like OmHarmonics, is nothing new: ancient civilizations used the hypnotic effects of rhythmic drumming and chanting to elicit a trance-like state. Once you get into meditation with brainwave entrainment, you meditate effortlessly. Brainwave entrainment does the work for you, letting you use meditation as a tool for relaxing, spiritual connection, personal growth, etc.
2. Meditation Audio Tracks
Sometimes it’s helpful to have someone guide you through a meditation, helping you create the right mental images and moods. A century ago, you’d have had to find a meditation teacher and spend hours, days, months under their guidance.
The modern advantage is that we can access some of the best spiritual teachers in the world through their recordings. Whether you need a guided meditation for weight loss or concentration, or some inspiration… It’s available when and where you need it.
3. Meditation Apps
Meditation apps make it easy to find and enjoy a guided meditation, or just some soothing meditation music, anywhere you happen to be. Right in your portable device.
4. Meditation Centers
If you are looking for support and community, you’ll find that meditation centers are common in major metro areas. Even smaller towns offer meditation classes at recreation centers and churches.
5. Catnap with a cool compress.
Many people associate the overwhelm of modern life with heat (we talk about “blowing off steam” in a physical sense, but it’s important to release the emotional “steam” as well).
In the afternoon, set a timer for 10 minutes. Lie down and place a cool, moist washcloth over your eyes. Visualize the heat of “doing” dissipate… turn your thoughts to one positive thing (choose a dream, goal, intention, etc.), and drift off to sleep thinking good thoughts that go through you like a cool, refreshing breeze.
On some days, you’ll fall asleep almost instantly but on others, you will be in a blissful focused meditative state for part or all of the time. It’s a wonderful chance to “reboot” during the day. Limit your catnaps to 10 minutes so you don’t wake up lethargic!
And for the tough days… try these “on the go” meditations:
- Walking mindfulness meditation: Focus on the physical experience of walking and to your surroundings. Whenever your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the present moment. Bonus – walking releases physical energy and stress.
- Walking intention meditation: as you walk, think of your intentions for the day. How do you want things to go? Think only about what you want, not what you worry about. It only takes a few minutes to visualize the ideal scenario so you can do this quick meditation many times throughout the day!
- Singing meditation: Sing along to your favorite songs. Really get involved in the melody, the words, the emotions. Caution: don’t do this while driving, as you will become too focused on the singing to drive safely!!
- Walking mantra meditation: chant a mantra (a word or phrase meaningful to you) as you walk, exercise, or do household chores.
- Gratitude meditation: Anytime, anywhere, give thanks. As you go about your day, name as many things as you can to be grateful for.
